Welcome to the sh** Black Ops. From http://www.brightsideofnews.com/News.aspx?id=1267&page=0 Some of you may be extremely excited about the future release of the next installment of the newest installment of the Call of Duty franchise. The Black Ops [or "COD7"] installment appears to be very close to Modern Warfare 2 that was made by the basically defunct developer that went by the name of Infinity Ward. As things have gone in the past, Treyarch, the developer of COD: Black Ops, is basically taking the previous COD game engine and slightly tweaking it with new game modes and new maps and models. Personally, I’m not too big of a fan of these Treyarch games… but after what Activision and Infinity Ward did to MW2 on the PC… it’s hard to live up to worse expectations. This leads us to today’s announcement - Call of Duty: Black Ops will definitely have dedicated servers. That is, as long as you get them from gameservers.com. We can compare that with Henry Ford's legendary statements that customers can have a car in any color as long as it’s black. The gameservers.com statement goes, "GAMESERVERS.COM SELECTED AS THE EXCLUSIVE DEDICATED SERVER PROVIDER FOR CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS. GameServers.com, in an exclusive contract with Activision and Treyarch studios, announces that they will offer dedicated server rentals for the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops release scheduled for November 9, 2010. We are extremely excited about this unprecedented relationship with Activision to offer dedicated servers exclusively for Black Ops”, says David Aninowsky, CEO of GameServers.com. “We are placing a great amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure that we exceed any and all expectations." What does this mean? It basically boils down to Activision Blizzard, Inc. still wanting control over what kind of content is played on the servers and not allowing the development community to do as they please. For gamers, this means that there won’t likely be many if any mods much like MW2. The exception, though, is that there could be a possibility for a competition mode of the game, but that’s still, of first, last and only resort. GameServers.com effectively have a monopoly on COD: Black Ops server hosting. They also have limited the ranked multi-player to 18 slots just like MW2. If in theory want to have more, you can pay for an unranked server for $.99 per player per month. So, for those of you that thought that Treyarch and their announcement of dedicated servers would bring back life to the COD franchise, Activision appears to have made sure that they limited it to the point of not really being dedicated anymore. This appears to be yet another game that has been ruined by the narrow mindedness of management that only wants to see margins and deliver dates rather than a good game. This, in the end, will hurt Activision greatly as they are effectively killing off a franchise on a platform that it originally started on. Interestingly though, it looks like Activision Blizzard is desperate to repeat the curious case of Electronic Arts and their fall from grace. If MW2 didn’t leave a bad taste in gamers’ mouths, there’s a good chance that the way Activision is handling Black Ops may. Here is also a new game play video of COD: Black Ops that was just released. Edited by {KN}MrOj, Sep 11 2010, 01:41 PM.

I know most of the details of this. I am still reasonably confident that we won't have any issues with the game. This is a similar server situation that Battlefield BC2 has done. However EA limited Battelfield to ALL plain vanilla servers. We have already been promised much more than this. A couple things that we as PC gamers are going to have to get used to. 1.) Piracy protection for software in the form or Games for Windows or Steam. I don't like it, but it's a fact, it is much easier for the developer to control what is done with their product, and keep people honest. 2.) Dedicated servers that do not have redistributable server files. If they keep their grip on them, they can sell DLC, and keep a better handle on "cracked" servers. (servers that allow pirated copies of the game.) So far Treyarch have done what they have said they were going to do. They have people on their team that are pulling for the PC platform, and many think that have gone to bat make sure we keep features that we are used to. Is the landscape changing? Yes. For the better? That is to be determined. Dedicated servers.. Yes, you do have to rent from gameservers.com, but this happens to be our host already, and we would have rented from them anyway. Monopolies aren't fair, and I support the other game server companies on their right to file suits against Activision regarding their monopoly case. I believe several companies are already planning their legal arguments. Mod tools.. Yes they will be creating mod tools. Does this mean that we will be getting custom maps? Probably.. They have not guaranteed that ability.. but as smart as the community is, I have no doubt that somebody will get it figured out. Dev console.. They have confirmed that we will have access to the developer console. This is pretty much a guarantee with the talented mod community out there, that regardless of whether or not they give us mod tools there WILL be mods. Mod tools make it easier for them to create mods, but are not 100% necessary for the most talented guys out there. I would liken it to writing HTML, you can do it on notepad, but it's a lot easier with an editor. Will we have to pay for DLC for this game? My guess would be probably yes. Depends on a lot of different things. And for the expansion maps that may mean that the offical maps will cost money. If the game is good, I'll be willing to shell out the money, if it sucks like MW2, then I won't... Simple as that. Treyarch came up with a compromise that should cover us. "ranked" servers will have experience points and "unlocks" that will be strictly controlled on those servers. There will also be the option of "unranked" servers. These servers will be able to host custom content and have more player slots availible. I will be getting this game, and probably pre-order. I have every Call of Duty. This series has been my game of choice for FPS, and I'll get this one too. We already have a pre-order for a "ranked" server. If we like it, maybe we'll also open an "un-ranked" server to allow for larger games. We'll wait and see what happens. I'm a sucker for trying out custom content, and mods. We as a clan will be able to figure out our direction with it. Will it be as good as the others, or will it suck like MW2? We'll see... But I think the biggest deficit that MW2 had was no dedicated servers. Dedicated servers have anti-cheat software, AND give the community the ability to police the servers with server admins. I think that alone will help the game a great deal. MW2 wasn't a terrible game, but rampant cheating has made it a very hard game to play for me. With that fixed, I think that will give the game a much larger advantage over MW2. Some of the new game modes like gun-game and wager match look intriguing. We'll see how it all plays out. See you in the KN Black Ops server in November!!!

I don't know when the pre-orders will start. I'm sure it will be available for "pre-download" on Steam shortly before release. I'm not sure how long before you will be able to pre-order the actual DVD. As far as I know.. If you have a somewhat modern computer you should be at lease able to play. My guess is the requirements won't be much higher than for COD5 or COD6. They are still using the same engine they have used for he last 3 releases. Refinements have been made, and graphics have been changed, but the basic engine is the same. My guess is that the requirements won't be much if any more than MW2 was. Here is a list of "predicted" requirements. I don't think I'd get too worked up about the processor spec yet, MW2 still supported single core P4's. It really depends on how much they can optimize the game before release. Call of Duty 7 PREDICTED System Requirements* Intel Processor- Core 2 Duo E4700 2.6GHz AMD Processor- Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ Nvidia Graphics Card- GeForce 8800 GTS ATI Graphics Card- Radeon X1900 Series RAM Memory- 2 GB Hard Disk Space- 10 GB Direct X- 9 Edited by {KN}You're Damn Skippy, Sep 12 2010, 09:45 PM.

The 8800 is a solid older card. Should be a steal since they are retiring the G92 GPU.
